Jason Vorhees is coming to television.
The Friday the 13th franchise continues on. Even after 35 years, the relatively simple concept of a slasher film starring a mindless, indestructible Frankenstein-zombie with the gimmick of wearing a hockey mask still draws in crowds. Sure, the series was suffering from declining box office receipts in the late 1980’s, but the last two entries featuring Mr. Vorhees were big hits. Only issues with the rights to the Friday the 13th series have halted a new film. (By the way, a new film is probably coming out in the future as well) Fans like Sergio Cortes know that a television show is in development for the CW so Jason is making a huge comeback.
The hockey masked maniac is even going to be featured as a character in a Mortal Combat video game!
As for the television show, the focus would be on the people living in the town of Crystal Lake and the effects of the killings on them. Do not think for a minute that Jason is not going to be a huge presence in the series. Without scenes of Jason, the television series is going to flop.
Do not look for a redux of the 1980’s program Friday the 13 – The Series in which the title was a bait and switch on fans. In those days, the cable universe was a lot smaller and horror fans did not exactly have a lot of genre programming to watch on television. Anyone producing a Friday the 13th series for TV knows the weekly program has to maintain the same elements that made the film series successful.
In other words, Jason has to play a major role.
